Maybelline Colossal Kohl Jewelled Jade Review and Swatches
(Author ~ Sanchita)
I was pretty much in love with the Maybelline The Colossal Kohl – both black and turquoise one. Then, around beginning of the last year they introduced 3 new colors in their Colossal kohl lineup – Crushed Emerald, Jewelled Jade and Smoked Silver. I want much into colored liners then so I didn’t pick up. However, last month, just on a whim I picked up two colors and have been wearing them for various occasions. I love the way it pops up on the eyes and makes it look bright.

MY REVIEW
Packaging – Maybelline Colossal Kohl kept similar packaging for their colored kohls as well. It comes in a bright yellow retractable plastic pencil body with a slim cap. It has a twist up function and the cap shuts with a click. The unlike the regular black kajal, it has a colored band indicating the shade 9along with shade name) on the lower half of the tube. I also noticed that the kajal doesn’t come in a cardboard wrapping (as the Black one used to be). The cardboard ensured that the pencil has not been tampered with but for the colored kohls, there is no such provision. I would surely consider this as a con. Rest assured, the pencil is light weight, easy to slip in anywhere you want and has a good built as well.
Shade – The shade ‘Jewelled Jade’ is a deep teal, leaning towards the azure blue. The color does have gaudy shimmer or frosty touch but a mild layer of sheen, giving a very ‘jewel-toned’ feeling. It is this sheen that actually brightens up the face and goes along with every skin tone. I was initially hesitant whether the color would suit my warm undertones or not but I loved the way it has turned out to be and how beautifully it brightens up the eyes without being strong and bold. You used as a liner, it looks great, even for daytime.
Pigmentation – The pigmentation of the kohl is good. With two swipes, it provides you with a full saturation of color. However, it disappointed me slightly on the waterline. The color saturation on waterline is slightly low and you need several swipe to show up. But they again, for the price it is considerable.
Texture – The texture of the Maybelline Colossal Kohl is not overtly creamy but nothing dry and worthless as well. It is somewhat in the medium and resembles a creamy-matte texture. It glides on the eyelids and waterline without any tugging or pulling of the sensitive area and easy to work with. Due to the slight tight texture, pressure doesn’t break it off and you can easily work with it. If you want to apply this color as a base for eye makeup or something like a smoky eyes, I suggest you blend quickly because it has the tendency to settle down quickly and doesn’t budge at all. Best, if you can use fingers rather than a brush.
Formula – The formula of this pencil is smudge proof and waterproof. These are qualities are extremely important for any eye makeup to last and it surely doesn’t. It sets quickly on the eyes and doesn’t budge at all. You will experience minimum fading due to the natural oiliness of the lids (especially in hot and humid conditions) but it is absolutely normal for any long wearing makeup. Also, I splashed water on the face but this kajal didn’t seep down at all.
Longevity – the longevity of the kajal is as good as the black kohl. It stayed on my eyes for around 6hrs with minimum fading in this humid weather. Of course, it does fade out (not completely though) from the water line after 4hrs or so but it will not give you any kind of messy, smudged and funny looking eyes at the end of the day. To elongate the staying power, I suggest you use a primer, eyeshadow base or oil control powder on the lids to get maximum benefit.
OVERALL
Maybelline Colossal Kohl Jewelled Jade is a pretty teal-blue color with jewel tone, soft texture and good pigmentation along with long wear formula that doesn’t smudge or seep down with the passage of time. It is also budget friendly and suits the Indian skin tone pretty well.
